My partner (28) and I (27) have been living together for a few months now but together for almost 2 years. Me moving in was not planned at that time but my mom needed a place unexpectedly and had no where else to go. He and I had planned to move in together in the spring originally. For the most part, it’s gone well. Our communication is pretty good and we do talk things out and make sure the other one feels understood and heard. He just started his new job this week after being unemployed for 3 months due to him unfortunately being fired from his previous one. Shit happens and we got through it and I worked extra shifts to make extra money for bills and expenses though he also received money from his 401k with them that we were able to use towards rent and other bills which was helpful. Anyway, since moving in together and him losing his job, I suppose it’s made me become more proactive about things like cleaning the house and making sure he’s on top of things, especially regarding his new job. I see it as me giving advice and reminding him and pushing him but the other night, he told me I was becoming “too motherly” and that that was the reason he cut his mom off in the first place and he didn’t need it from me either. I’ve taken what he said to heart and I haven’t tried to give what seemed like a “motherly opinion” lol. With all that being said, im wondering what being too motherly comes across to men and what really stands out? ETA: he’s a wonderful man and a very loving partner which is why I felt so much hurt within myself when he brought it up because I genuinely do not try to be nagging or overbearing. I’m working on it! submitted by /u/Kellytime1
