I noticed this while moving work between assistants, and once you see it you can’t stop seeing it. Coming in is designed to be easy: Claude has an “Import to Claude” page that says “Switch to Claude without starting over.” You paste a prompt into your old assistant, copy what it writes back, and Claude updates its memory. Anthropic says it takes “under a minute.” Gemini has “Import memory to Gemini” under Settings & help. It accepts your ChatGPT or Claude export as a zip of up to 5 GB, 5 files a day, and Google’s help page walks you through exporting from each rival step by step. Imported chats go into your Gemini activity, which Google uses to improve its services, including training its models. Going out is a different experience: ChatGPT: Settings > Data controls > Export. It “can take up to 7 days to arrive,” and the download link expires 24 hours after it does. Business and Enterprise workspaces have no self-service export at all. Claude: Settings > Privacy > Export data. You get an emailed link that expires after 24 hours, and you can’t start it from the phone apps. On Team and Enterprise plans it only works if an owner has turned it on. Gemini: Google Takeout, where the box labeled “Gemini” only covers your Gems. Your actual chats are under My Activity > Gemini Apps. In every case you get your whole history at once, as raw files in a zip. None of them lets you save one whole chat as a file from inside the chat. Gemini comes closest, with Export to Docs for a single answer. My read: import is a growth feature, built by the team that wants you to switch. Export is a privacy feature, built because you’re entitled to a copy of your data. It even lives under Privacy in the settings. You can tell which team built which from how each one feels to use. The practical result is that your history drifts toward whichever app you used last, and the apps compete to be the one holding it. If you work across several, the only complete copy of your own work is one you keep yourself. That’s a big part of why I build AI Toolbox, a browser extension that exports any chat straight from the page on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok, as TXT, Markdown, JSON or PDF, and searches across all four. One chat as TXT is free. Other formats and bulk export are Premium. Do you keep your own copy of anything you’ve done with AI, or does it all live inside the apps? submitted by /u/Ok_Negotiation_2587
