Disclosure: we publish The Sumsuber, which covered this proposal. Florida’s proposed Safe Screens Act would require AI chatbot operators to determine users’ ages and would restrict certain chatbot features for under-18s. It also proposes app-store age checks, parental consent for minors’ downloads, and restrictions at the operating-system level. This is proposed legislation, not a rule already in force. For AI developers, the interesting question is where age assurance should happen: at the device or app-store level, inside each chatbot, or across both. The proposal calls for privacy-preserving methods, but collecting additional identity information introduces its own data-handling risks. Which approach could protect younger users without making every AI service collect identity documents? submitted by /u/Sumsub_Insights
