Insurance companies are required to file their rate models with the state insurance regulator. You can read through these to understand the factors that influence your premiums, but the format is pretty unwieldy. Documents are in PDF format and can be over 550 pages. The rating rules document provides multiplier factors that go into determining the final premium. AI tools are very good at understanding these documents. You can attach the PDF to the AI chat with the prompt:

Read this automotive insurance regulatory filing and build an understanding of the factors which influence insurance premiums. Create a tool that lets the user explore rate calculations for their personal situation. The tool should let the user see the impact of changing various inputs. The AI provides a summary of the document, and it also provides an interactive UI that you can experiment with the various factors, such as age, martial status, accident history, deductibles, policy limits, credit ratings, and so on. I found this really interesting and informative. It could help someone understand the impact of their vehicle choice, getting married, getting a speeding ticket, having an at-fault accident, and so on. It maps out every contribution to the final premium in a way that is probably less opaque than what the insurance company provides directly to consumers. You should even be able to do this with the free tier of the AI tools. (I tried this with the free tier of Claude Sonnet 5.5., along with Gemini 3.8 Flash. Attached are some screenshots from the Claude version.) And, of course, there may be factors that influence your premium beyond what is captured here, so the output might vary from what your insurance company actually charges, but this is generally how they arrive at that number. submitted by /u/NotEasyBeingGreener
