Chatted to a friend about this his dad used to go easy on him and let him win at games/sports but his dad slowly made it harder when he improved. he thinks it wasn’t good because it made him feel like he was better than he actually was so didn’t feel the need to push himself. My dad never held back so I had something to aim for but I found it disheartening to keep trying when I had no chance of winning. Just made me curious what others think is the best way to make progress and stay motivated when learning a new skill or sport to build confidence by winning or to be beaten until you improve enough to be genuinely better. The fact we both think the other person’s experience is better made me want to ask in case it’s just us being bias against what we experienced. submitted by /u/No_Effort_Given
