The odd part of this one is who asked. Citrini Research, a financial investment research firm, approached Anthropic with the question of whether Claude could help motivated non-experts tackle a real health problem. They landed on scorpion neurotoxins, in the hope that binders could one day lead to an antivenom. Per Anthropic’s write-up: an internal research model worked mostly on its own for 64 hours, with four follow-up prompts from the team. It generated 318,484 protein designs and picked 180. The team added 31 more with Claude’s help. Adaptyv Bio and Twist Bioscience lab-tested all 211, and 17 met Anthropic’s criteria for a binder. Anthropic says it has not confirmed that these neutralize scorpion venom in a cellular environment, so it does not claim to have made an antivenom. It is releasing all 211 designs and the data.
