Cloud models have a very big problem which is very hard to solve, and it is not technological. The biggest issue with cloud providers is that nearly all tech companies face, but worse: they want to rip the benefits of language models, but do not want to face any liabilities. This is a huge problem because not only do they concentrate a lot of power, but also change their rules on a whim. We saw that behavior with the sudden change of behavior when disassembling games, or refusal to translate content because it supposedly goes against the alignment of said models. Some, like GPT, will not refuse to translate content, but will sanitize it without the user knowing. All that being considered, is it REALLY a good idea to dismiss all programmers and translators and rely on 2-3 big tech companies? What if they start seeing your business as a threat for whatever reason? What if those companies decide to move into your field, and decide to use your disclosed data to sabotage you? What if you dismiss all your programmers, then have a large workflow which relies on those models, and you are censored and/or refused overnight? I believe that those companies will resist trying to tackle these issues as much as they can, and language models can only ever become somewhat reliable if they are used locally, because at least they will be guaranteed to work in a more consistent and reliable way, and won’t be censored overnight.
