EDEN is an evolution sim I have been running live for 18 days. Three species with inherited genes and a tiny neural network each: 12 senses, 8 neurons, 8 actions. For weeks my tests said the brains barely mattered. Then I noticed why: on the stream, every round’s founders are born with a random brain, so whatever good wiring appeared was thrown away every round. So I took the brains off the stream and ran 300 generations of evolution strategies overnight. Then the honest test: 240 rounds the brains had never seen, same seeds, same bodies, same genes, only the brain changes. Ravagers went from 7% to 62% wins, Nomads from 42% to 95%, Sylvans from 52% to 87%. When all three species get evolved brains, the Nomads win 57%, so it is not live yet. Next step is co-evolving each species against the others’ best brains.
