Imagine that you replace one of your brain cells with a nano tech cell that performed exactly the same functions as your brain cell. Chances are you’d be conscious and feel like yourself. Now do it again. And again. Until your whole brain is replaced. Would you still feel like yourself? Your identity would not have changed at all. But replace the whole brain at once… and I suspect you would have ceased to exist as you. But the new brain would be someone. Now tell me… why can not a machine be someone with an identity?
