Hey everyone! 👋 I’ve been using Claude and ChatGPT quite a lot for software development, mostly for brainstorming, architecture decisions, debugging, and planning features. So far, I’ve mainly been using their chat interfaces, but I’m looking to take things a step further and properly integrate Claude Code and Codex into my development workflow. For context:
- I’m working on a fairly ambitious personal project (a SaaS platform) with a growing TypeScript monorepo using Turborepo.
- VS Code is my main IDE. ( Even tho I also uses Webstorm sometimes )
- I currently have Claude Pro ($15/month subscription) and ChatGPT Plus.
- I want to use AI for both pair programming and more autonomous tasks (implementing features, refactoring, writing tests, etc. while I’m busy at work for example), cause I don’t have enough time to invest in my project after work and I want to progress faster
- I’d like to keep my costs reasonable rather than upgrading to expensive subscriptions. My biggest concern is context and usage consumption. I’ve already noticed that Claude’s limits can be reached pretty quickly, even with my Pro subscription, when working on complex topics. I’m worried it’ll be even worse once Claude Code starts exploring a large codebase, reading files, and making changes across multiple packages. I’m trying to figure out how to get the most out of these tools without wasting usage on unnecessary context or repetitive operations. A few things I’d love to hear your thoughts on: Context management: How do you prevent Claude Code from consuming too much context when working on larger projects? Do you use specific rules, documentation files, or other techniques? CLAUDE.md / AGENTS.md: How do you structure these files? Do you maintain instructions per package, or keep everything centralized? Model selection: Do you switch between models depending on the task? Is Sonnet sufficient for most development work, or do you regularly need Opus? Claude Code vs. Codex: For those using both, how do you split responsibilities? Do you use one for planning and the other for implementation, or something else? Workflow: Do you usually plan features in the chat interface first, write specifications, and then hand them over to coding agents? Or do you handle everything directly inside Claude Code? Cost optimization: Any particular settings, tools, MCP configurations, or habits that have noticeably reduced your usage without sacrificing code quality? I’m especially interested in hearing from people working on medium-to-large projects or monorepos, rather than small standalone applications. I’m not necessarily looking for the most powerful setup regardless of cost. I’m looking for the best balance between productivity, code quality, maintainability, and usage efficiency, ideally while staying on my current $15/month Claude Pro plan. Would love to hear what your actual daily workflows look like, what you’d recommend setting up from day one, and what mistakes I should avoid. PS : I never really use Claude Code / Codex yet so any other tip / link to some guides or anything will be really helpfull too ! Thanks in advance! 🙏 submitted by /u/CaptainZiboo
