A detail from this study worth discussing: the system started producing speech before the participant had finished trying to say the sentence. Researchers at UC Berkeley and UCSF worked with Ann, a woman with severe paralysis. An implant recorded signals from the brain area involved in speech production. She silently attempted sentences shown on a screen, and the team trained an AI model to map those signals to speech sounds. Their earlier approach had a delay of about eight seconds for a sentence. With the streaming system, the researchers reported getting the first sound out within about a second of detecting her attempt to speak. They also used a recording from before her injury to make the generated voice sound more like her. This was an experimental system tested with one participant. It decoded attempted speech, and the study didn’t demonstrate reading arbitrary private thoughts. Beyond getting the words right, what would make a synthetic voice feel like yours? Your accent, your laugh, the way you emphasize certain words? Research paper, March 2025 submitted by /u/coursiv_
