The future background: -RSI will happen. Soon we’ll have AI with the intelligence beyond what any human has ever imagined. And the rest of this is assuming what happens if we don’t die. -When you say intelligence a lot of people assume you mean only the “brainy” professions like math, programming and physics. Intelligence includes everything you do with your mind, emotional intelligence, intuitive intelligence, etc. AI will be better at all of those. -Obviously AI will also control robots perfectly, better than humans control their own bodies. -AI will also develop technologies that’ll make energy so much cheaper and thereby everything else so much cheaper. -Nobody is going to have a job, but that doesn’t matter. If governments passed the tiniest social safety net we’ll be able to live in abundance. And for the countries without a social safety net, letting them live in the same abundance is going to be so negligently cheap that we’ll just give them money too. -But we will find that in this world where everyone can get whatever they want at any time including art, ideas, and an AI partner better than any human partner ever we’re not happy. Then an experiment: -Superhuman AI will propose an experiment – even though AI is superhumanly intelligent it’ll still need experiments. It’ll be a smarter version of this: -Build an island. On that island AI is used to remove a lot of the problems of the old world. For instance it’ll create a robot infrastructure to deliver food so that nobody has to starve. It’ll deliver medicine too, and robots will ensure there is no crime. -But other than that there is no AI on this island. No neural network, no chatbot, no AI images, no social media algorithms (they’re neural networks too). -The experiment is to see whether people are happier living on that island after a year (or longer, since the new medicine is going to increase our life expectancy). And the answer is going to be yes. And a lot of the people who are pro-AI now will also be happier living on islands like that. Why?: We can adjust to every other technology. But not to machines smarter than humans. Let’s use art as an example. Today you say “I can use AI to bring my ideas to live.” -In the future world outside the island: Let’s say you want to make a movie. You CAN just type in a prompt “Make a movie for me” but remember AI is better at EVERYTHING. The ideas AI comes up with are going to be so much better than anything you make. You can show this movie to your friends, but they will not enjoy the movie like they would a completely AI generated movie. They will watch it to be nice to you, not as entertainment for themself. -On the island if you want to make a movie or draw a picture or write a book, it’s going to be hard work. Hard work doing it and also hard work learning it. BUT all the other movies or books or art on the island are also made by humans. So more people are going to see your work, because your competition is not superhuman. Also: The only way to enjoy art on that island is if another human made it. So people are going to genuinely appreciate the work you did. Then read this and replace art with any other profession. -Also, also: When the art we consume is not 100% perfect all the time, but a mixture of some good some bad, like art made by humans is, we enjoy the process of consuming art more. submitted by /u/ForgotMyParachute
