It recently dawned on me that my friends while fun and kind are neither present in my life unless I initiate contact and plan hangouts, yet worse they aren’t smart/clever. It shows when we discuss anything and they 9 out of 10 times have the most mind numbingly dumb takes. In and of itself, who cares! Here’s the thing. I’m trying to improve myself and all they do or wanna do is watch movies and play video games. Who wouldn’t but when they’re middle age and that’s their ceiling, uhm, I feel something is very lacking here and it demotivates me to pursue my goals. You are the company you keep and they aren’t in the same stage of life I’m in. I’m sorry if this post reeks of elitism or being a snob, I might be guilty of both. I just want friends who push me to be better and are genuine. Thanks. For context, I’m a man, early 40s, single, no kids, mildly fit and financially secure, and can afford to spend any time of the day doing what I want. As for hobbies, I enjoy the usual, movies, shows, games but I’m returning to reading (self help books), working out (consistently but not too hard and at home). I try to go out more but I suffer from misophonia so tend to avoid crowded places. Genuinely looking for good advice here. Cheers submitted by /u/ultra-0
