I’m from Lausanne and I speak french. I’m due to start my military service in the summer of 2027 (in fact, I’m thinking of doing the long service so it’s over and done with for good, and then I can start my Master’s at EPFL or ETHZ). I’m not exited about this news, and I thought to myself that, to motivate myself, perhaps now would be the time to learn German and Swiss German, as I’d like to work in Zurich or Germany at some point in my life. I wanted to know how the mix of languages works – can I ask to be placed with Swiss German speakers, and will they be nice to me so I can learn from them? Or will I just end up with no mates and be sad and lonely? And does 10 months seem like enough time to learn a language if I make an effort and work on my vocabulary and grammar on the side?
