I’ve been following the discussions around the upcoming vote here on reddit and realized there’s a important point that many seem to miss: While the proposal is indeed about financing part of the extra cost of the 13th AHV payment through a VAT increase, everyday basic goods are not affected by this increase: Food and medicinal drugs will not be affected by this increase. So it will affect low earning people much less than people who have capacity to spend money on other services and non-essential consumption, and it turns out to be a more solidaric way of financing the additional cost than if it were for instance salary deductions, where it would be only financed by working people (and not seniors), and both low and high incomes would be taxed equally. Also, for a person with an average income you pay annually about 85 CHF only in additional VAT. It’s not terribly much, to put it into proportions. Remember, than the goal of the right is to weaken the AHV alltogether and then increasing your retirement age. This understanding now made me vote yes. Before I was doubtful. I hope this brings some clarity to others, too. submitted by /u/Sea-Anything9250
