As it stands AI labs develop these huge omnipotent models with data from the entire Internet, just for users to narrow them back down to a certain <role> in the systemprompt. (I’m generalizing here, but you get the idea.) And our biggest concerns with these highly potent models are misuse and misalignment. Both of which inherit existential risks for humans. So, wouldn’t it be smarter to create AI models as we create specialized roles in the economy? Small models that excel in a particular field? You could’ve a model that is specialized in law, but useless for developing code. Or specialized in medicine but useless in accounting. In other terms: Instead of rushing towards a “singularity”, why not compartmentalize AI competence and then develop collaborative systems for different models to cooperate. Within these systems we could quite easily implement safety guardrails. Much easier than solving the alignment problem. AND there’s a potential to simultaneously reduce (energy) cost and improve output quality. submitted by /u/FLTR069
