My girlfriend and I have been together for almost 5 years, and she’s been telling me for the last year that she’s emotionally unfulfilled in our relationship. I work 6 days a week, and when I’m off, I usually want to relax, watch football, play video games, watch movies, or spend time with my dad. My girlfriend understands that I need downtime, but she feels like everything revolves around what I want to do. She wants more romance, spontaneous dates, pictures together, random couple activities, and for me to actually initiate things without her having to ask. Sometimes she suggests things I’m not interested in, so I decline or make excuses. She says she doesn’t expect me to enjoy everything she likes, but she’d appreciate me making an effort. When she brings up how unhappy she is, I tend to get defensive, focus on her tone or delivery, and explain how she’s making me feel. She says I end up turning the conversation around instead of acknowledging her concerns. Most times I get angry enough to say we’re done or deliberately say things I know will hurt her. She’d basically be homeless with no other family around. Then she usually ends up trying to save the relationship. I’ve also called her ungrateful and brought up the fact that she lives with me at my family’s house rent-free, even during arguments that have nothing to do with finances. She says appreciating what I provide doesn’t mean she can’t express emotional dissatisfaction. Another issue is that I’m not very expressive. When she accomplishes something, my reaction might just be, “Oh yeah? Nice.” She wants encouragement, enthusiasm, and sometimes a thoughtful gesture instead of a pep talk. When we argue about these things, I might become more affectionate, attentive, or romantic for a day, but eventually I fall back into my usual routine. She’s told me she’s tired of explaining the same things repeatedly and that she doesn’t want to beg for romance, consideration, or emotional support. To be fair, she can be blunt and sarcastic, and sometimes her delivery bothers me. I’ve been with her for this long, why DON’T I get it, right? I feel like she doesn’t always understand my perspective either. I don’t think I’m a terrible boyfriend, or maybe I am but I’m starting to wonder whether I’m so comfortable in this relationship that I’ve stopped putting in meaningful effort. My questions: How do I stop getting defensive and making everything about my feelings when she’s trying to explain hers? How do I stop expecting things to go my way and become more willing to compromise? How do I show consistent romance and initiative instead of making changes for one day? How do I manage anger without threatening to break up or deliberately hurting her? How do I make her feel appreciated and emotionally supported when expressing those things doesn’t come naturally to me? What should I realistically expect from her in return, and what should we both work on? I’m looking for genuine advice, including criticism of my own behavior. I want to understand what I need to change instead of having the same argument over and over. submitted by /u/Altruistic_Ad_5507
