Why does our English accent sound so cringe? When I speak English, I feel like I do not have a typical Swiss accent. But when I listen to a recording of myself, I realise that I actually have a pretty embarrassing accent. 🤣 People from other European countries, including countries whose languages sound similar to Swiss-German (Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish), do not sound nearly as cringe, even when their accent is strong. Not even talking about people from southern or eastern Europe – they can have an extreme accent and still sound better than a Swiss person with only a slight accent (including Roger Federer, who grew up in an English–Swissgerman bilingual household). Or does it only sound cringey to us because it is our own language background, and people in other countries feel the same about themselves? submitted by /u/Round-Elk-6324

Can’t really answer that as I don’t know the Swiss accent. But I absolutely think English with a heavy Dutch accent is extremely cringe. So maybe you are right, perhaps people are more sensitive to their own language when it bleeds through.
