Why does our English accent sound so cringe? When I speak English, I feel like I do not have a typical Swiss accent. But when I listen to a recording of myself, I realise that I actually have a pretty embarrassing accent. 🤣 People from other European countries, including countries whose languages sound similar to Swiss-German (Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish), do not sound nearly as cringe, even when their accent is strong. Not even talking about people from southern or eastern Europe – they can have an extreme accent and still sound better than a Swiss person with only a slight accent (including Roger Federer, who grew up in an English–Swissgerman bilingual household). Can’t really answer that as I don’t know the Swiss accent. But I absolutely think English with a heavy Dutch accent is extremely cringe. So maybe you are right, perhaps people are more sensitive to their own language when it bleeds through.
